Edith non si trova bene nell'alta società della New York di inizio '900, il trauma della madre deceduta, l'aspirazione ad essere una scrittrice e le strane allucinazioni di cui è vittima la rendono diversa dagli altri. Per questo quando tra gli spasimanti si palesa un carattere anticonformista come Thomas Sharpe, uno che sembra amarla per quello che è, Edith non ha dubbi e lo sposa in gran fretta. La morte del padre la costringerà a trasferirsi lontano da New York, a Crimson peak, dove Thomas vive con la sorella Lucille in una casa fatiscente e spaventosa. Là Edith incontrerà la realtà del loro rapporto.
